Optimal redundancy through 4G Wireless Wan solution

Everday is a spin-off of KiesZon, a major shaper of the solar revolution in the Netherlands since 2009. Everday organizes within an operational lease, roof rental or purchase structure the development, financing, realization and operation of large-scale solar power projects on rooftops or in field arrangements. To track and troubleshoot outages from its solar power projects, Everday looked for a 4G total solution. Capestone provided Everday with the right mobile Internet solution. As a result, Everday achieves an uptime of over 99.5% for all of their solar power systems under their management and an optimal return on investment.

Businesses choose solar panels

For the vast majority of companies, sustainability is an important factor. Yet sometimes investing in a renewable energy supply yourself, such as solar panels, is not the first choice. The relatively high investment is then a barrier. Reason enough for Everday to completely unburden clients, when it comes to a solar power supply. Since its founding in 2009, Everday was the first in the Netherlands to develop into a fully vertically integrated solar power company. Everday sets itself apart by having all the knowledge and expertise of the entire life cycle of a solar installation in-house. Thus, everything at Everday remains completely in-house.

The solar projects range in size from 160 to 160,000 panels. One of these projects is at a distribution center in Oss, where Everday installed a solar roof with 7,508 solar panels. To read the solar panels and send the data to Everday’s Monitoring and Reporting Platform, a reliable, secure and fast data connection is essential.

Indeed, a major problem with Everday’s connectivity was data failures. ”By far the most service calls were about this. That’s why for the project in Oss we went looking for a party that could guarantee reliability of data communication” said Frederik van Asbeck, Manager Operations & Maintenance. Other requirements for a partnership were: to provide quality hardware, combined with fast and high-quality service.

Solution

These requirements found Everday at Capestone. Capestone offered a complete mobile Internet solution by providing the combination of a Teltonika RUT955 router along with IoT connectivity on eSIM technology. With its I/O ports, RS232 and RS485, the RUT955 is ideally suited for M2M applications such as solar panels. Through the Teltonika RUT955, the communications cabinet of the entire installation can transmit data from each of the transformers to the Everday control center. That way, data can be read remotely, equipment can be controlled remotely, and Everday can do predicitive maintenance: maintenance based on data from the setup. The collaboration has been the start of many subsequent projects between Capestone and Everday.

Improving performance through data

A functioning mobile-internet solution allows Everday to read its data from the solar projects. This data is uploaded to a server via a push. Here the data is read and visualized through a Monitoring and Reporting platform. Using the visualizations, Everday can easily analyze the performance of the solar power system. Thus, Everday is able to detect abnormalities at an early stage so that they can be investigated in time. As soon as an anomaly is detected, a service engineer is dispatched to the site. This one can use various measurements to bring a problem to the surface so that it can be solved. As a result, Everday achieves an uptime of over 99.5% for all of their solar power systems that they manage, and optimal returns are achieved.

In addition to Everday, the Platform is also used by its customers. Through a self-developed dashboard, customers can quickly see what the productions are and whether goals are being met. The Oss-based distribution center, for example, can read out that it has achieved a 2020 yield of 1,842,848 kWh. This is equivalent to 1,105,709 kg of CO2 avoided.

Collaboration Capestone

Frederik van Asbeck says of the cooperation: ”Capestone is the party that advises Everday in the field of mobile data communication. The lines of communication are short and when problems arise, a suitable solution is sought together. Fast, decisive and informal.”
